HUMMINGBIRD GUEST HOUSE
PORT ALBERNI RIVERFRONT B&B INN
Spectacular Curb Appeal!
"It was completely by chance and
extraordinary good luck that we
came to stay at the Hummingbird.
When Cheryl showed us to our
fabulous "apartment", we were
astounded and have enjoyed every
moment in it. We did drag
ourselves away from the
luxurious surroundings to visit Tofino,
Ucluelet and the Pacific rim
National Park where we walked
the Rainforest Trail. Took the
steam railway to the sawmill,
bringing back memories of school
lessons many years ago about
logging in Canada. An
interesting visit to the Coulsen flying
tankers and watched salmon
swimming up to spawn at Stamp
Falls. This is our last week of
our month in Canada and it just
gets better."

We
fell in love with the house &
property the moment we set foot
on it four years ago. We'd sold
our business in Alberta and were
out on the Island looking for
business opportunities and to
change our lifestyle. The house
just seemed to lend itself to
becoming a B&B so that made up
our minds. We knew nothing about
starting a B&B nor the
marketing/advertising end of
things but we had the
entrepreneurial spirit and
the firm belief that good
customer service makes any
business successful. The
property itself brought two
things to the table. The "wow"
curb appeal big-time and
location, location, location.
Locals have spent the last 100
years eagerly watching this
place "grow" up, as each owner
has put their distinct stamp on
it. We have had tremendous
support from the business and
local community. It was
fun designing each guest room to
bring out its distinctive
personality. We "stayed" in each
room, before we opened, just to
experience how a guest would use
the room. We listened to our
guests and watched how they used
the rooms. We are still
"tweaking". We designed our side
of the home to be private,
efficient
and entertaining-friendly so we
could continue with a lifestyle
of dinner parties and games
nights with friends and the
neighbours. Our home consists of
two bedrooms/2 bathrooms with an
open concept kitchen, dining
room and living room. One or two
bedrooms could easily be
returned to the owners
residence. As well, the Sunburst
Suite is a perfect apartment for
extended family. The former
owners operated two home-based
businesses from the property and
it would be easy to still do
so. We also came with dogs and
cats so we needed to design
luxury areas for them seperate
from the guests. Port Alberni
has a tremendous number of
festivals and events throughout
the year but especially in the
summer. We've designed a
check-in procedure that works
for both guest and us so we
don't feel "tied" to the
property. We're even able to get
away for an afternoon of fishing
and dreaming on the boat. I'm
more behind-the-scenes while
Wayne is the social butterfly. I
do most of the bookings and
checking guests in plus the
cleaning while Wayne does the
breakfasts and spends time
chatting with the guests as well
as being the fishing guide. We
have chosen to let our guests'
words, from each room's guest
book, speak to the beauty of
this home, this property and
this valley. ~ Cheryl & Wayne

"We had a flood in the
kitchen and needless to say we were very upset over the idea of having to leave our home for an indefinite period of time. When we arrived here to look at your place, we both knew immediately that we had found a "second" home. We really would not have made it to today without your hospitality. The suite is bright and comfortable and has all the amenities. I have been able to cook meals, do laundry and work at home on my computer. We have been able to go to work each day without any worries."
~ Doug & Dianne, Port Alberni
"We did not intend to stay overnight in Port Alberni but as we drove past, we liked the sign and the house itself. Our first impression turned out right - we enjoyed the cosy atmosphere, the garden & hot tub, the quietness, the boat excursion to the Broken Group Islands and the whales. We took some great pictures!"

"When we found your
haven of rest and
relaxation, we were both
weary travellers. Now we
are both fully refreshed

"We enjoyed our stay
and, without a doubt,
our bed was the most
comfortable bed we have
slept in for a very long
time. Having a restful
sleep is very important
when travelling. I loved
being able to pick up
the cats and going for a
walk in the garden. A
lovely retreat."~ Gina & Peter, Mill

"We decided on
the spur of the moment to pack an overnight bag
& drive to Port Alberni. Beautiful day, awesome
scenery. We stopped at Cameron Lake for a swim
like two giggly kids. It was sooo refreshing.
Just driving around, we spotted the Hummingbird
& really liked the look of the house & grounds.
Once we met Cheryl & Wayne & they graciously
showed us the two empty rooms, the games room,
the beautiful backyard and hot tub, we chose the
Dogwood Room. It was the best sleep we've had
away from home & we loved it so much we stayed
another night, did the tourist thing & we're
booked for two days in August. Thank you for
your hospitality, interesting conversation,
awesome breakfasts & just for making us feel
right at home. What a great way to end our
holiday. Totally refreshed & relaxed."

"What a
wonderful finale to our wedding day! We
relaxed in the hot tub before spending our

woke to rays of sunshine, in a luxurious bed

elegance, charm & comfort. This was the
perfect place to awaken at, anticipating how
our love would continue to grow from this
day forward. We loved our stay here."

"What a blast
I've had out here going fishing, coming back
to relax, have supper (without the dishes
part afterwards), sipping cold beers while
playing pool or sitting in the hot tub. Then
crawling into that very comfortable bed and
being rudely awakened to the smell of a
delicious breakfast."
~ Ryan,
the hurtin Albertan
"I had such
a good time here, it really is a home away
from home. Your hospitality was unreal, the
breakfasts delicious, the beds unbelievably
comfy, and when I wasn't sleeping on the
boat, having a lot of fun! I couldn't have
caught my first fish without you, mostly
because I wouldn't touch it."
~
Lindsey, the sister to the hurtin Albertan
"We
could not have asked for a better place to
spend the weekend. The breakfast, sauna, hot
tub, the rooms, the yard and the FISHING -
loved it all! We may not have won the
fishing derby but we got a halibut! You sure
made us feel at home!"
~ Summer
& Sergio, Cochrane, AB
"What an
experience - from fishing, kayaking, tubing
and everything so organized. We sure had a
great time. I will be passing on our

forget it."
