Safety Training offers the following programs to assist
corporate and government organizations in meeting
Transport Canada requirements for small commercial
vessels:

Basic Safety
3 days (19.5 hours)
MED A1
Designed
specifically for people starting a marine career. The
course provides basic information on marine hazards
including fire and abandonment procedures and survival
and rescue skills.
Small Vessel Training
4 days (26 hours)
MED A2
Recommended for officers and crew of small passenger
vessels and pleasure craft. Course covers marine hazards
and emergencies, emergency preparedness, firefighting,
sea survival distress signals, emergency equipment
inspection, maintenance and use and passenger control
during emergencies.
Basic Safety
1 day (8 hours)
MED A3
Emergency safety training tailored for crew members
working on inland waters in Western Canada or the
Territories as fishers or fisher helpers on fishing
boats up to 150 tons; as deckhands on small commercial
vessels, including passenger vessels not offering
berthed accommodations; and as crew or operators of
commercial vessels up to 60 tons.

Small Non-Pleasure Vessel Operator Proficiency
Training
3 days
Designed to meet the needs of small vessel masters
(fishing and cargo) operating not more than 20 miles
offshore. MED A3 prerequisite is required.
Master Limited Certificate
102 hours*
Prepares people with appropriate prerequisite
theoretical training and sea service to act as Masters
of vessels up to 60 tons.
Fishing Master,
4th Class 140 hours*
Prepares people with appropriate prerequisite
theoretical training and sea service to act as Masters
of fishing vessels of between 15 and 100 gross tons.
*Credit may be given to candidates who have completed
prior applicable training programs.

Who
Needs Marine Emergency Duties
(MED) Certification?
Under
current Transport Canada regulations, if you are working
on small vessels in a non-pleasure or non-recreational
environment you will require some level of marine
emergency duty training. The MED Certificate that you
need will depend on the size, type and location of where
you operate.
Please

Where Do I Get the Training ?
Interlake Safety Training clients are those corporations
or government organizations that require marine
certification training. We specialize in delivering
on-site in your marine environment. Our training is
delivered by qualified instructors with first hand west
coast, inland and arctic commercial marine navigation
experience.

 Terry Simcox
of Interlake Safety Training, holds a Master’s
Certificate for vessels up to 500 tons. He is an
experienced instructor in a number of inland marine
skills and first aid techniques. Terry has over 30 years
of commercial marine experience and is presently a
Canadian Coast Guard officer based on the west Coast. He
regularly conducts training with federal, territorial
and provincial governments who operate small vessels and
passenger ferries. He also conducts training for private
industry such as: shellfish organizations, tour boat
operators, fishers, and guides and the oil and gas
industry.

Transport Canada approved training programs throughout
all provinces and territories in Canada.
